COUNTRY CLUB OF HILTON HEAD (843-681-4653)
Hilton Head Golf Course Review
The Country Club of Hilton Head is a par 72 Rees Jones championship design featuring a terrain that meanders through pristine marshlands and pine forests along the intra coastal waterway. The property has served as host to U S Open Qualifying, and is known as a shot maker's course, with 14 holes that dogleg in one direction or the other.
Water also plays an important role in the design, as 16 holes have hazards in play in some shape or form. There also are 96 sand bunkers of varying shapes and sizes, that will challenge golfers off the tee and on the approach shots to the smaller size green complexes. Land in regulation however, and good scores can be had as the putting surfaces are mild in slope and undulation.
Golfers will appreciate the great variety in hole design, with some very generous fairways mixed in with those that are tightly configured between rows of trees, ponds and mounded bunkers. Five sets of tee boxes play to distances and slopes measuring 6919 yards/138 slope, 6543 yards/135 slope, 6162 yards/129 slope for men and n134 for women, 5658 yards/120 slope for men and 127 for women, and 5372 yards with a slope of 123 for ladies hitting from the forward tees.
On course yardage markers are posted on the cart paths and fairways at 100, 150 and 200 yards, sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green, and bushes on the sides indicate the 150 yard area. Color coded flags provide information on the day's front, middle or back pin locations. All carts have rear covers to protect clubs during inclement weather.
There are some forced carries, with two of the more challenging tee shots being those over water hazards on the par third and par four 5thon the front and the beautiful par three 14th on the back side. Chose the correct tee boxes for your game, and even those are reasonable. This is a fair and challenging test that can be enjoyed by golfers of all skill levels - and the price (topping out at around $109 with cart for the general public during prime time in 2009) is right!
The clubhouse features a pro shop plus snack area serving hot and cold sandwiches, and there also is a half way house. The practice facilities are comprehensive, and include a targeted grass range, short game area with sand bunker plus putting green.
