Golf - General Information
The beautiful natural setting on this coastal sea island provides a stunning environment for courses designed by three legendary golf architects. The entire golf program, from the clubhouses to practice facilities to the three championship layouts, are infused with a lasting commitment to quality and customer service. All three facilities are equipped with air conditioned golf carts that heat and cool with a flick the switch. Segway Golf Transporters are also available, allowing golfers to save time by riding directly to their shots at speeds of up to 12.5 miles and hour. Coolers and rear weather protectors are also standard on each golf cart.
The yardage markings systems on all three courses include permanent markers on the cart paths at 100, 150 and 200 yards, 150 yard stakes in the middle of the fairways and randomly placed plaques that are measured to the front, middle and center of the green. Scorecards include info on the green designs and pin placements. Each clubhouse has a pro shop and restaurant/lounge that serves breakfast and lunch menus. The Jones clubhouse also has a locker room with showers.
Robert Trent Jones Course
The Jones Course is the shining jewel of the property - ranked as South Carolina's Course of the Year in 2003 (Golf Digest Places to Play). Renovated in 2002 by Roger Rulewich, this layout features raised, undulating putting surfaces with Champions Bermuda turf, and rye over-seeded fairways and tees. The practice facility here features a targeted range with mat and grass tee surfaces, plus a putting and chipping green. There are 62 soft, white sand bunkers, with plentiful, fairway traps - requiring golfers to plan their tee shots carefully.
A lagoon system winds its way through 11 of the course's 18 holes, providing aesthetic beauty and challenge. Holes number10 and 11 play towards and from the ocean, providing wonderful views of the Atlantic on each. Golfers will encounter fairways bordered by trees and extensive mounding that often frame penal sand bunkers. Swales and mounding greenside also create the need for accurate iron play. Besides the signature par five 10th, our favorite holes were the beautiful par four third with an approach over water, the par three 8th with a tee shot over water to a green defined by a wood retaining wall, and the par four 13th which presents a formidable carry over water from the back tees.
There are five regular sets of tee boxes that play from distances and slopes measuring 7005 yards/138 slope, 6570 yards/131 slope, 6141 yards/ 122 slope 5621/123 slope and 4097 yards with a slope of 112 from the forward sets. Uniquely, the Jones Course also provides a Junior set of tees, that play to 2625 yards. This is one of the most gorgeous and challenging layouts on the island - highly recommended.
